Landscaping with palms may be a bit of a challenge if you don’t know the trees or exactly the best place to put them.

Some good examples are: If you were looking for a centerpiece tree, privacy screens, small ones for containers poolside, etc.

I can’t include every palm there is so I’ve included the most popular and easiest to acquire.

No point in picking out a tree if you can’t easily find it for sale.

Here I’ll break the landscape areas into groups and add the palms that are perfect for that placement.

This way you’ll have a list of possible trees to choose from making for better planning of your backyard paradise.

There may be overlaps as some types could end up being good for more than one location.

Skip to the section you want to learn about for a list of the trees in each.

Then click the tree for detailed growth and care info. Here are the categories:

Centerpiece Trees

Landscaping with palms- picking a centerpiece tree.

You will also find I have noted, leaf shape, plus the ones that get rather large either in height or width and ones that stay small.

The rest are considered a medium size.

You don’t want one that is too big or tiny for your spot once it matures.

Palms for Group Planting for a Centerpiece Display

Triangle Palm TreeLandscaping with palms for group planting:

Plant a group of any of these varieties very close together.

As they grow the will gently arch the trunks away from each other and come back closer together at the leaves.

Use as a centerpiece grouping for a dramatic statement or focal point. All are of the single trunk variety.

Groupings of 2, 3 or 4.

Landscaping with Palms for Privacy

Palms for Privacy: these trees are the ones that can be planted to block the view of your yard.

They are clumping varieties that will have many trees at varying heights. This means full leaves at different levels creating the screen.

Use between houses, along a wall, or at the end of a swimming pool.

You could add other smaller plants in front of them for an even more attractive layered look.

Moisture Loving Palms

Landscaping with palms for wet, moist climates:

These few types are tolerant to lots of water.

They are accustomed to a more wet, tropical and rainforest type conditions.

Old Man Palm- Coccothrinax crinita If you don’t have this kind of climate you will be supplementing with lots of water during drought conditions.

For extra humidity you can plant close to a pond, pool or other fresh water source

Drought Tolerant Palms

Palms for drought: These palms are best suited for drier conditions. They will survive in drought like conditions much easier than the ones mentioned above. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they wouldn’t appreciate regular watering.

Palms for Lining Driveways + Streets

Landscaping with palms for street or driveway lining: These palms will to grow in a straight up manner if planted and spaced accordingly. Someone asked which type of palm is better for street lining the royal or queen? plus a bonus question answered on date palms too.

Planning ahead will ensure that your new palms have the room and conditions they need to thrive. It will also save you time and money.

Moving them because they are getting:

1. too tall - starting to hit hydro lines

2. too wide- constantly brushing against your house in the wind

Could be costly, or worse you may have to remove them all together. After all that time and investment, no one wants to see that.
